How to Prepare Your Perth Backyard for a Pool Installation

Before the Dig Begins

Getting a pool installed is exciting, but a bit of preparation goes a long way. Over dozens of installations across Perth, we've learned exactly what makes a project run smoothly — and what causes unnecessary delays.

Here's our practical checklist for Perth homeowners.

1. Check Your Council Requirements

Every local council in Perth has slightly different rules around pool fencing, setbacks, and building permits. Before committing to a design:

  • Check your property's setback requirements — most councils require pools to be at least 1 metre from boundary fences
  • Apply for a building permit — this is mandatory for all pool installations in WA
  • Pool fencing compliance — WA law requires all pools to be enclosed by a compliant barrier (we can guide you through this)

We handle the permit applications for our clients, but it's good to understand what's involved.

2. Assess Site Access

The fibreglass pool shell arrives on a crane truck and needs to be lifted over or through to your backyard. Key things to check:

  • Gate width — ideally 2.5m+ for smaller pools, or crane access over the house
  • Overhead power lines — these need to be clear of the crane's path
  • Trees and structures — anything that might obstruct the crane or excavator
  • Neighbour access — sometimes the easiest path is through a neighbouring property (always ask first)

During our free measure and quote, we'll assess access and advise on the best approach.

3. Know Your Underground Services

Before any digging starts, you need to know what's beneath your yard:

  • Dial Before You Dig (1100) — a free service that maps underground utilities
  • Irrigation and reticulation — Perth homes almost always have retic that needs relocating
  • Septic systems and soakwells — these need clearance from the pool
  • Gas and electrical lines — must be located and protected

We coordinate all service locating as part of our process.

4. Plan Your Pool Surrounds

While not essential before installation, thinking about your surrounds early saves time and money:

  • Paving or decking — what material suits your home's style?
  • Fencing — glass, aluminium, or tubular steel?
  • Landscaping — plants, lighting, and garden beds
  • Equipment location — pump, filter, and heat pump placement

We offer complete pool surround packages and can recommend trusted local landscapers.

5. Set Your Budget

Be realistic about the full project cost, not just the pool shell:

  • Pool and installation — the core package
  • Fencing — required by law
  • Paving/surrounds — typically 30-50% of total project cost
  • Equipment upgrades — heat pumps, robotic cleaners, LED lighting
  • Electrical and plumbing — connection to your home

We provide transparent, all-inclusive quotes so there are no surprises.

6. Talk to Your Neighbours

This is often overlooked but genuinely important. Pool installation involves excavators, trucks, and some noise. Giving your neighbours a heads-up goes a long way toward keeping everyone happy.
